Book Review – “Who moved my cheese?” – Dr. Spencer Johnson

By

“Who Moved My Cheese?” is a motivational business fable written by Dr. Spencer Johnson and first published in 1998. The book presents a deceptively simple but profound parable that addresses the inevitable changes we encounter in life and how we can respond to them with adaptability and a positive attitude.

The story revolves around four characters living in a maze: two mice named Sniff and Scurry, and two little people named Hem and Haw. The maze represents the environment in which they live and search for “cheese,” a metaphor for what individuals desire and seek in life, whether it be success, happiness, wealth, or any other goal.

Initially, all four characters find a huge supply of cheese (Cheese Station C) in one part of the maze, and they are content and happy. Sniff and Scurry are instinctive, simple creatures who rely on their basic instincts to detect changes and quickly adapt. On the other hand, Hem and Haw are more complex beings, relying on their intellect and emotions to navigate through life.

Over time, Sniff and Scurry notice that the cheese supply is dwindling, so they are quick to acknowledge the change and decide to venture out to find new cheese. In contrast, Hem and Haw become complacent and overly comfortable with their existing situation, convinced that the cheese will never run out.

When the cheese at Cheese Station C indeed disappears, Hem and Haw are initially shocked and devastated. They spend a considerable amount of time complaining, blaming others for the change, and feeling victimized by the circumstances. Hem becomes fearful of the unknown and clings to his comfort zone, refusing to leave the empty station.

In contrast, Haw, though initially resistant, begins to realize the necessity of change and the potential for growth and discovery outside his comfort zone. He realizes that staying in one place will not bring back the cheese, and that he needs to take a risk and move on. Haw starts a journey of self-discovery and personal development, leaving behind the fear and embracing the possibility of finding new cheese.

Throughout his journey, Haw learns valuable lessons about adapting to change. He develops a “handwriting on the wall” mindset, recognizing the signs of change early on to avoid being taken by surprise in the future. He also learns to overcome his fears and adopt a more positive attitude towards change, seeing it as an opportunity for growth and new possibilities.

The book concludes with Haw finally finding a new cheese station, stocked with abundant cheese. He writes on the wall, “When you move beyond your fear, you feel free,” and decides to help others who may come across his writings in their own journeys.

“Who Moved My Cheese?” serves as a powerful allegory for the challenges we face in life and the importance of adapting to change. It emphasizes the need to embrace change, let go of fears and limiting beliefs, and cultivate a proactive attitude to achieve success and happiness in an ever-changing world. The book’s simple yet impactful message has resonated with readers from all walks of life, making it a timeless and widely popular guide for personal and professional growth.
